About Despised Cruelty
A solo beginning in Bełchatów
Despised Cruelty began in Bełchatów, Poland, in 2013 as Michał Bentyn’s atmospheric black-metal solo project. After the demo Seasons, Bentyn moved to Łódź and the project developed into a full band. That transition from solitary authorship to a working group shaped the next phase.
Michał Bentyn began Despised Cruelty in Bełchatów in 2013 as a solo project and issued Seasons that July. This origin matters because the name later belonged to a functioning group rather than remaining a studio alias. The available Polish history presents the move to Łódź as the practical turning point: new musicians made rehearsals and concerts possible and changed how songs had to be arranged.
Łódź, a full band and the stage
Fall of All the Divine followed in 2016. During this period the band increased its live presence in Poland and supported international acts. The first full-length Łez padół arrived in 2019, consolidating the catalogue before the interruption and inward turn of the pandemic years.
The 2016 demo became a practical turning point because it coincided with more regular live activity. The group played across Poland and appeared with international acts, turning a studio-centred project into a band whose material had to work on stage. Łez padół in 2019 then provided the first full-length summary of that phase. The pandemic did not simply delay a sequel; published band history describes a retreat in which a different, more urban record took shape.
Fall of All the Divine arrived in March 2016 and coincided with increased live activity in Poland, including appearances beside international acts. Łez padół followed in February 2019 as the first full-length summary of that period. The chronology should resist calling the 2016 item a debut album: the official archive identifies it separately, while 2019 is the first full-length.
From atmospheric roots to urban pressure
The second album shifts the established atmospheric foundation toward modern melodic writing and a distinctly urban climate. The music joins forceful riffs and dissonance with melancholy, while Polish lyrics frame anger, hopelessness and dissatisfaction with contemporary life. This description is supported by band and release material rather than inferred from the title alone.
Published band history describes the pandemic period as more than an interruption. Withdrawal from regular activity opened space for a record tied to urban experience in Łódź. The shift does not erase the melodic and atmospheric black-metal base; it places shorter, direct pieces beside longer structures and gives social and architectural surroundings a stronger role. “Urban black metal” is used by the band on Bandcamp and is therefore reported as self-description.
Niech zdycha
The production credits reveal how much of the album’s identity was built collaboratively while Bentyn retained responsibility for its visual direction. Case Studio provided the recording environment, Jakub Piotrowski the final mix and master, and Daniel Pryga the photography. Listing those roles is more than technical housekeeping: it prevents the solo-project origin from obscuring the labour of the later band and its production circle.
Niech zdycha was released on 18 December 2024 with six tracks. Bentyn played guitar and directed the visuals; Aleks Kowalski added guitar, Eryk Gwizdała bass, Konrad Bińczyk drums and Maciej Miętkiewicz vocals. Sławomir Papis recorded the band, Jakub Piotrowski produced the final sound, and Daniel Pryga supplied photography. These credits document the distance travelled from a one-person beginning.
Production, images and the TRG edition
Talheim Records Germany released Niech zdycha digitally and as a six-panel digipak under catalogue number TRG019CD. The collaboration applies to this second album; Seasons, Fall of All the Divine and Łez padół retain their own earlier release histories.
A second album as a new starting point
Despised Cruelty’s public history now spans a solo origin, expansion into a live band and two full-length albums.
